Although rice is one of the most consumed food commodities in the world, cooking basic rice still remains a mystery to some home chefs. Most packages of rice includes basic cooking instructions but understanding rice ratios is the best rule of thumb to take the mystery out of cooking rice.
The ratio for cooking most medium and long grain rice is 2:1 (2 parts liquid such as water or stock to 1 part rice). So if you would like to make 2 cups of rice, you will use 4 cups of water. Of course not all rice is the same. Here at Village Harvest, we source rice from all around the globe. Each rice has its own special qualities ranging from aroma and taste but more importantly, each rice grain is very different.
Brown rice requires additional liquid and longer cooking time as it takes longer for the rice to absorb the liquid. The ratio of liquid to rice is 2.5:1.
